I work mostly in straight digital
because I can get the best detail.
...But sometimes people prefer a more traditional, painterly style that blurs out the less important detail so the focus stays on the more important features
Greyscale images are often used in interior illustrations to cut printing costs
For spot illustrations that you want to blend intothe white pages, pencil sketch style is best.
Not only can I provide a variety of media - I can replicate your illustration in various styles at a minimal cost - because I don't have to repaint the entire image each time.
One example of how easy it is to make adjustments is a recent commission I did where we played around with composition, color and props.
We moved the moon over the shoulder and changed the pool stick handle color
We moved the moon around again for another option
We tried cropping it and warming up the colors.
Notice the placement of the 8 ball had been changed also.
Easy when you start out in 3D.
Here is another color adjustment using cooler gradients
You can see how convenient that is.
A traditional painter would need to tediously repaint every change,
which could take days for each alteration.
Then they'd have to re-scan the image after the paint dries.
I can make changes in minutes, or at most an hour or so
and send it as soon as I'm done.
And traditional illustrators,
when they have to go through all that to make a simple change,
Get frustrated and downright nasty with you!
Not me :)
This is the September 1998 issue of Analog, Science Fiction and Fact Magazine.I painted this in Tempera Paint and Color Pencil. That's how long I've been in the Sci-fi/Fantasy genre
Since then I've worked with lots of self-publishing authors who publish using websites like CreateSpace and Lulu
I help businesses all over the world in ways you'd never expect...
...and most recently my 3D modeling experience has expanded from just illustration, to product design, invention mockups, 3D printed figurines and video games
I've been commissioned to create....
monument sign mockups
clothing color-option mockups
3D printed miniature characters
RPG Fantasy characters
video game characters and textures
.... and probably a few things I haven't thought of.
